A Team That Doesn't Fit One Mold

TextQL exists to drive the cost of data-driven decisions to zero. Focusing on regulated industries, they want to empower anyone to ask a natural-language question of an enormous, messy pool of data and get a trustworthy answer back."The rest of the market tells these companies to go clean their data first, then come back," said Dylan Whitmore, Head of Finance and Operations, "Then they hand you a forty-million-dollar bill and a two-year project."

TextQL went the opposite direction. It told the companies with the most complicated, most regulated data environments in the world "It doesn't matter how messy it is, how much you have, or how disparate it is, we can work with it." TextQL’s agents do the cleaning and organizing over time, on the customer's behalf, rather than as an obstacle to overcome before getting started.

That same instinct shapes how the company thinks about benefits. Its team is, by Whitmore's description, a deliberate social experiment: ex-founders and young builders out of schools like Waterloo on the engineering side, seasoned operators from Oracle, AWS, and IBM on the go-to-market side. Some came up through trading internships at places like Citadel and still follow the markets closely; others are within a decade of retirement, which is its own kind of unusual at a startup.

A conventional 401(k) forces a team like that to pick a lane. TextQL didn't want to. "We lean toward generosity and finding the best solution," Whitmore said, "so we mitigate the need to square that circle constantly." Basic Capital was the provider that made that possible with a native brokerage window that lets an employee hold a conviction position without popping out to a separate account and juggling two logins, turning "square the circle" into "let everyone draw their own."

A Transition That Didn't Become a Second Job

What sealed it wasn't only the product — it was how little the switch cost the team. The question every company dreads when changing 401(k) providers is whether the migration will inadvertently become someone's full-time job for three months. It didn't.

"You came in, whipped the incumbent into shape, and told me exactly what I needed to do and when," Whitmore said. "You didn't leave any room for me to run down rabbit holes." His verdict on the experience was blunt: "Complete white-glove service." Basic Capital carried the coordination, sequenced the steps, and handled the handoff from the previous provider.

The support has since become something of an internal legend. When one employee posted that Basic Capital replies within minutes every time, a colleague assumed a bot was behind it — until the real person on the other end confirmed he was, in fact, human.

Why It Works

For TextQL, the decision was simple. They got a 401(k) flexible enough for a team that spans active investors and near-retirees, and a transition that never became anyone's second job. For a company that spends its days taking friction out of other people's work, having a benefits partner do the same was the whole point.

A company built to get value out of the messiest data environments found a retirement partner built on the same instinct: meet people where they are, and take the friction to zero.
